Have you heard about garcinia cambogia? Perhaps you’ve watched a video in your Facebook feed or on YouTube. Maybe you’re wondering if the stories about it are too good to be true, or is there finally a product that does what it claims and can actually help you lose those unwanted pounds.

Garcinia Cambogia Fruit DietStruggling with weight loss is one of the most difficult and persistent health conditions to overcome. According to the NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), more than 2 out of 3 people are overweight or obese, and more than 1 out of every 3 are obese in the US.

Take a look at this map to the left. There is not a single state in the US that had an obesity rate less than 20% of the population. And that was back in 2010.

The dark red color represents a 30% and above rate of obesity in those states. Has six years made much of a difference in obesity rates? No. Despite national efforts to create a more health conscience population, greater attention placed on avoiding processed foods, along with weight loss programs, fad diets, pills, and health clubs, the problem with obesity continues to grow.

Proof Diet Programs, Pills, and Shortcuts Do Not Work

By 2010, when none of the states reported an obesity rate of less than 20%, it was clear that this problem was not going away.

What About Garcinia Cambogia, Will It Help You Lose Weight For Good?

Before I continue I want you to know: I know what it’s like to be obese. I was once 100 lbs overweight. If you want to know more about how I lost weight and have successfully kept it off for almost a year now, you can read my story here.

There are many reasons why people are overweight. For me the problem was made more difficult because of Lyme’s disease. I’d contracted it many years ago and I didn’t even know. This made weight loss a real struggle, in part because of how my immune system had been affected.

But I’m not using that as an excuse; I know my weight problem came from a diet that consisted of too many processed foods, foods with added sugars, and very little fresh fruits and vegetables. You may struggle due to similar reasons, everyone is different. But I can speak from personal experience when I say: Don’t become desperate and try just anything to lose weight.

So what about this new claim about garcinia cambogia, the miracle diet fruit mentioned on the Dr. Oz show? Statistically speaking, there has yet to be a pill, herb, or diet program that has helped people lose weight and keep it off. The maps already referenced provide compelling evidence that fad diets and miracle pills, herbs, and or extracts do not work.

I am just like any other person who wants to lose weight and keep it off. When I see a video that shows someone losing weight without struggle I am curious to know how they did it. I’ve lost 100 lbs and have successfully kept my weight off, but I still worry about it. I’d love to find something that would ease my mind a bit and help keep the weight off. And there is no shortage of products that claim to do just that. But this brings up a problem, one that’s not easy to see. What is that?

Unstudied pharmaceuticalls

The problem for those who want or need to lose weight is not knowing exactly what you are ingesting. Did you know that many of over-the-counter diet products are laced with prescription drug ingredients, some of which have yet to be tested by the FDA?

Do you take any prescriptions? How about over-the-counter pain or allergy medications? Are you aware of how the ingredients in common over-the-counter medications, or your prescriptions, interact with diet pills, or herbs? Or what should be avoided? A pitchman in a lab coat is not necessarily a reliable “expert.” The sobering fact is this; the FDA has around one trillion regulations that govern what products are safe or not for the public. They simply don’t have the ability to keep up with the product surge.

By the time they are able to make a determination on safe or unsafe products, especially products labeled “natural,” these have usually been on the market for some time. Often the only way the damage is really noticed is when people die or have severe reactions.

These products that come on the market that claim to help you lose weight are created by companies that do not care about you or your health. All they care about is the billions of dollars they can rake in before the FDA shuts them down, or the fad runs dry.

FDA cannot protect against all products.Anyone you see promoting a diet product online is selling it and profiting from the sales as an affiliate.

Consider the Weight Loss Study Regarding Garcinia Cambogia

You are probably aware of the placebo effect. Usually around 50% of a control study will be given a placebo; told they’re taking to real drug, but given a fake. The interesting thing about placebo’s is that they really do work. A high percentage of people that are given placebo’s will actually have positive results.

In addition, sometimes the studies include aspects that not all participants take part in. This is what happened in a study that included people who used HCA (hydroxycitric acid). HCA is extracted from the rind of the garcinia cambogia fruit and is the source of the weight loss claims.

This particular study revealed an additional weight loss of just 2 pounds for participants whose diet included HCA. However, those who took part in this study were placed on a restricted calorie diet and participated in an exercise program.

This review was published in the Journal of Obesity. The study was found to be inconclusive as to the additional weight loss being attributed to HCA. More studies are required to make any such claims regarding this ingredient being an effective weight loss aid.

  2. You’ve done really well to lose your weight and keep it off. The diet industry is a billion dollar industry and growing, yet obesity is also growing, there’s something not quite right in that scenario! My approach to weight loss is a simple one; eating well and exercising on a regular basis That might sound easy but I know it’s not, with all the temptation of unhealthy food being bombarded at us 24/7 it takes a lot of willpower and self discipline to ignore it.

    Plus making yourself go to the gym or for a run is equally as difficult! But it’s the sacrifice you have to make if you want to be a healthy weight. Ultimately it’s a mind game and anyone looking for a quick fix is in the wrong mindset and unfortunately are not likely to reach their goals.

  4. Readıng such artıcles convınces me all the more to take the more dıffıcult road to weıght loss.. that of simply eating good natural food. I will just pretend to have that band and reach for the healthy stuff and eat moderately. Thank you for such an indepth view of this ‘miracle’ product.

I too (while only being overweight by about 10-15 kegs) wanted to lose wieght and was willing to try anything “quick and easy” I could get my hands on, but what I didn’t take into consideration was the side effects… Dont forget… side effects aren’t always physical effects!!! It can also play a massive roll with your mental state.
    I’ve tried many “fad” lose weight fast diets and so many of them may have worked! But… the mindset… well, it wasn’t in for the ride! I tried things, took tabs, drank shakes, even stopped all fizzy drinks.. (I think that lost me about 6kgs just doing that) but as soon as I lost the weight I just piled it back on and started the vicious circle again but with doubts. So nothing will work without “work”…
    Always be careful to research everything when it comes to new fandangle lose weight fast schemes.
    Usually someone else usually end up with an fat wallet while we hang on to the fat we are trying to lose!!!

    • Exactly Dale. Today I actually set my timer for 90 minutes just to give me a time to snack on some granola I made yesterday. I just had lunch and I didn’t need more food, I just wanted it. Home made granola is sooo good. So, I’m giving myself 90 minutes to work on other things and when the timer goes off I will have a snack. 🙂 It requires planning, but it’s well worth the effort. Dieting is just wrong. Glad you are not doing that anymore.
